The Education Resource Centre (ERC) is the academic wing of the Education Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory. it was established in 1984 with members of staff on temporary site at Jabi Primary School compound. In 1985, the Centre was moved to the Open University Complex, Area 3, Garki, Abuja, and in 1990, it finally moved to its permanent site at Wuse Zone 7, Abuja.
Until the year 2002, the ERC was administratively a division of the erstwhile Department of Education, FCDA. It however became an agency of the MFCT in April 2002, headed by a Director and it is currently an agency of the FCTA among others, which include, the Secondary Education Board, Universal Basic Education Board, Agency for Mass Education, Department of Policy and implementation and the College of Education, Zuba.
Our professional services are provided to the general public and to all primary and post-primary schools, both public and private in the FCT. Accordingly, we facilitate the work of teachers through training, seminars and workshops; formation of subject associations, selection and provision of curriculum materials, e.g. teaching schemes, textbooks; and through co-curricular activities such as debates, quiz, career days and application of psychological test materials; enhancement of library services through training, publication of newsletters, handbooks, examinations guidelines, conduct of school examinations for selection, placement, certification, etc.
The Centre reaches out to the general public, especially parents, guardians, researchers and independent learners, through book fairs, counseling clinic, radio talks. The ERC has city libraries, model laboratories, computer / internet centre and facilities for conferences, seminars, other academic programmes like quizzes and debates. It also holds French, English and Nigerian Language lessons for all categories of young and adult learners at the French Language Centre and the Language Laboratories respectively.
The ERC maintains a mutually beneficial liaison with relevant professional and educational bodies and associations, such as WAEC, NECO, Education Trust Fund, Federal and State Ministries of Education, NERDC, National Mathematical Centre, NESCN, Donor Agencies, the Curriculum Organisation of Nigeria, the World Conference of Curriculum and Instruction, NAFT, IAEA etc.
